Colby reinforces goal of winning UFC belt: “Biggest dream”

Colby Covington had at three points in his career the opportunity that every fighter dreams of: competing for the UFC straight belt. In all three scenarios, however, the American hit the post – twice against Kamaru Usman and once, most recently, against Leon Edwards. But despite the unfavorable record in title disputes, anyone who thought that the object of desire was out of 'Chaos' plans was mistaken. Former interim welterweight champion (77 kg), the 36-year-old veteran reinforces that his biggest dream is to reach the top of the category in a sovereign way.

In an exclusive interview with the Ag FightCovington stressed that his biggest career goal remains winning the Ultimate belt. Number six in the category's ranking, the American is already projecting how his fighting style would fit in with that of the current champion, Belal Muhammad. With his usual confidence, the loudmouth believes in his abilities to get back into the win column and claim another title shot in the future.

"For sure. The belt is still my goal and my biggest dream. I know I match (in styles) with the new champion (Belal). He's a wrestler, but he won't be able to take me down. So it's going to be a striking fight, and I know I can beat him in striking. The belt is my goal. Whatever I have to do to get back there, I want to prove to the UFC and the fans that I am the best welterweight on planet Earth”, highlighted Colby.

Plans to increase frequency in the octagon

At an age considered too advanced to compete in combat sports, Covington no longer has many years of career at a high level. Aware of this, the wrestler aims to increase his attendance inside the most famous octagon in the world to shorten his path to an eventual welterweight title fight. With an average of just one fight played each season in the last four years, Colby projects a 2025 full of commitments, with at least three clashes.

I think it's reasonable that I fight three times next year. I want to fight in the first quarter, then in the summer and winter. Overcoming injuries, that's the biggest problem. I got injured in the last fight, I was out for six, seven months healing my foot. Now I'm healthy again, I feel good. I'm in my prime now at 36 years old. I trained smart, they took good care of my brain. So fans can expect me to fight multiple times next year and regain the welterweight throne,” highlighted the American.

Before thinking about projections and plans for the future, Colby needs to turn his focus to this Saturday (14). After all, it will be his responsibility to officially close the 2024 Ultimate season. Scheduled to face prospect Joaquin Buckley, Chaos will be in the main fight of UFC Tampa. Sixth placed, the 'bad boy' tries to defend his place in the rankings against the young knockout artist, who currently occupies ninth place in the category.
