MMA League is created with a format for teams and former UFC champions

A new organization promises to shake up the MMA scene with its somewhat different format. Last Wednesday (11), Darren Owen announced the creation of 'Global Fight League', company based on team competition and which already has a number of former UFC fighters, including former champions, on its roster. The expectation is that the first season of the league will be held from April. The information was released on the program 'The Ariel Helwani Show'.

According to the team, six teams will compete in the regular and inicial season of the GFL and each will be made up of 20 fighters, two representing each of the ten weight categories (seven men and three women). The teams will be formed through a 'draft', just like in the main American sports, scheduled to take place on January 24th. In fact, most of the athletes on the organization's roster are known to the general public and have an extensive resume in the sport.

The new MMA organization features former UFC champions Andrei Arlovski, Anthony Pettis, Ben Henderson, Fabricio Werdum, Frank Mir, Junior 'Cigano', Luke Rockhold, Renan 'Barão' and Tyron Woodley on its roster. In addition to them, Alexander Gustafsson, Francisco 'Massaranduba', Gegard Mousasi, Kevin Lee, Marlon Moraes, Rousimar 'Toquinho', Wanderlei Silva, among others, also add weight to the company.

Scoring system

Just like the PFL, the GFL will use a points system throughout its regular season. If the professional wins the fight quickly (submission or knockout), he will earn four points for his respective team. The athlete who wins by decision will receive three points. A draw is worth two points. The fighter who is defeated by decision scores one point. Whoever loses via the fast track does not score. Therefore, the four teams with the highest points in the first phase advance to the semifinals.

According to Owen, the Global Fight League aims to 'redefine the business model and improve competition in MMA'. Therefore, the organization's basic proposal is to offer financial benefits to professionals and take care of their health and safety as a priority. In fact, Marlon Moraes is the leader of the company's athletes' association.
